actually, i wouldn’t call His Dark Materials atheist. They are far worse

instead of denying that there is a god and a bunch of ‘holy’ institutions and laws, what HDM is advocating is that these divinities don’t matter at all, if they exist in the first place, and should be shoved aside in place of a scheme of things guided by the moral compass of love, fair play, reason and skeptical curiosity.

In answer to Lisie – the sex scenes in the last book aren’t even explicit sex scenes. They’re euphemistic as all hell. You have to be incredibly repressed to find it inappropriate in any way.

I can’t believe people actually think that the Golden Compass has genital mutilation in it.

Potential spoilers:

Another complaint by who have never read the book is about the ’sex scenes’ in the last book – because people never explore their sexuality until they get married. And since Lyra and Will aren’t married when they ‘do it’, Pullman is promoting premarital sex, which is a mortal sin!

Excellent, but utterly utterly depressing post. It only goes to show what terrible people these are. What institution castrates people, again? Oh yes, it’s the Catholic Church.
